It’s important to understand the difference in energy sources throughout the world, and most importantly, within our own homes in community. The reason being is so we can make conscious choices when determining how we can use this energy more efficiently.
In the past, many of our communities have been built to use non-renewable energy resources, which brings about awareness to the fact that some resources will eventually not be available to us anymore. It may not happen in our lifetime, but many argue that it will happen.
The Difference Between Renewable and Nonrenewable Energy
What is a nonrenewable resource?
A nonrenewable energy product means that it is not going to be reproducing itself anymore. It has limited resources available from the earth.
One of the first products that come to mind would be fossil fuel’s. There are arguments to both sides of the topic of whether this is truly nonrenewable, however for this article we will look at it as a nonrenewable resource. Natural gas, oil, (which are both byproducts of fossil fuel’s), and coal are all considered non-renewable sources by most scientists.
What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is energy that is produced from natural sources that can be generated over and over without harming the earth. Also known as green energy due to low carbon emissions.
Types of renewable energy would be solar, wind, hydro (aka water), and geothermal. Solar and wind energy are the easiest to use in our homes and ranches. Water or geothermal would need to be used by larger communities along with larger scale solar and wind options.
Understanding the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources give us a leg up on protecting the earth and also on other ways that we can use energy mindfully.
It’s easy to start something on our own by choosing to reduce our dependency on electricity or natural gas, depending on what your home is using.
Solar is becoming more affordable for the homeowner and business owner. It’s not is as obtrusive as it used to be as technology changes and improves. Plus there are more and more products that continue to reduce our dependency on electric.
